Bengal BJP begins President poll process; National Chief announcement likely by June-end

The Bharatiya Janata Party has begun the process of electing a new state president in West Bengal, with organizational election activities underway. The party has called for submission of names for the State Council from all districts, a step that marks the beginning of the internal election mechanism. This comes amid ongoing discussions within the party regarding leadership changes at both the state and national levels.

According to BJP's guidelines, each assembly constituency must have one representative in the State Council. These representatives are responsible for voting in the state president election. Bengal BJP’s organizational in-charge, Deepak Burman, has asked district presidents to submit names of representatives from their respective areas. The complete list of State Council members is expected to be finalized and published in the first week of June.

Sources indicate that the nomination process for the new state president may begin in the third week of June, followed by elections in the fourth week. The party’s internal timeline aligns with the expected announcement of the new national BJP president by the end of June. There has been no official statement from the party regarding the names being considered for either position.

At the state level, BJP West Bengal president Sukanta Majumdar’s future in the role is being discussed within the party. Majumdar, recently inducted as a Union Minister, currently holds dual responsibilities. While no formal decision has been made, the ongoing election process for the State Council is being viewed as preparatory for a leadership transition in the state unit.

If the state president election is completed before the announcement of the national president, then the elected State Council will choose the next West Bengal BJP chief. However, if the national leadership is declared first, then the new national president will have the authority to appoint the state president, as per the BJP’s organizational structure and rules. No changes have been announced in the party's internal framework at present.
